First In First Out (FIFO) inventory management is traditionally associated with time-sensitive items (i.e., items with a shelf-life). While it is ideal for this, it offers a number of advantages even for items that are not time-sensitive.
One of the best ways to provide FIFO racking is a flow rack. It consists of inclined roller racking stocked from the back, with inventory withdrawn from the front. In the case of a Kanban System, there is often a "return" lane sloping the opposite way for empty bins.
Flow racks have a higher stocking density than conventional shelves as they can be considerably deeper. They also offer an ergonomic pick-face as the inventory is always at the front. As the inventory is moved using gravity, there is no requirement for electricity or other services to the racking.
